About Us
GiftHomemade.com was started in 2009 by me, Alissa, when I
was searching for ideas for homemade gifts. I've always created
gifts at home, especially for Christmas, and they've always
been well received. But in 2009 I was running out of original
ideas - I was hoping to find a place online with a wealth of
fantastic ideas and resources, but was instead lead to
beautiful craft blogs.
Although the blogs were gorgeous and very inspirational, it
was sometimes difficult to navigate and find instant ideas.
Quite frequently I would spend hours reading and trawling
through blogs in order to find only a few helpful and
interesting craft ideas to create.
I thought it would be a great idea to build a website that
linked all of these ideas together in one place, and had a good
resources page full of my favorite blogs and craft websites for
others to sift through. That way my time spent researching was
justified, and others would have a brilliant resource
when they came to create their own gifts also!
I continue to make homemade gifts, if not more than ever
before! I like to try out different things and experiment with
inexpensive ideas (like hedgerow jam and elderflower
cordial!) I definitely think that the more practical or
edible an idea is the better. People do love food, and are
always pleased to receive a gift they can use, that won't
clutter their house, but have an actual function.
When in doubt, I always work out if I would like to receive
a particular homemade gift, and if the answer is yes, it ends
up on Gift Homemade!
Some of the things that have been most appreciated are:
bunting for decorations, jam in different flavours,
cushion covers with initials in felt,
personalised reversible kitchen apron and
chocolate truffles.
My first ever homemade gift was a wooden letterbox that I
made in Brownies, my grandparents still use it to this day. We
had pre made sides and base with holes, we had to screw it
together and then decorate it ourselves. I painted on a Swedish
flag, and some other objects that reminded me of my
grandparents - if I was doing this now, I think I could come up
with some really pretty patterns - in fact, perhaps I will!
If you are looking for something that's easy to learn, but
takes some time to practice, and something that not many people
know how to do, try taking up knitting. It's a skill you
won't easily forget, and will come in very handy on cold
evenings. Start with a simple scarf, progress to a blanket,
then go for a hat, pair of socks and a cardigan. The more you
practice the better you will get, and soon you'll be able to
create something quite complicated, like cable
stitches or a fine wool knitted dress.
